Archer Aviation received design approval from the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to develop vertiport infrastructure in Abu Dhabi — a major step toward launching the world’s first flying car air taxi network.
The approval allows the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal helipad to be converted into a hybrid vertiport, supporting both helicopters and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The GCAA plans to formally publish vertiport standards by July 2025, which could serve as a global framework for advanced air mobility infrastructure.
In partnership with Falcon Aviation, Archer will upgrade the site with charging stations, landing pads, and safety systems tailored for eVTOL operations. By leveraging existing heliports, the company avoids the time and cost of building from scratch — enabling efficient deployment.
Archer aims to begin commercial air taxi service in the UAE later this year.
In short - no.
The UAE’s design approval is a major milestone that validates Archer’s air taxi ambition, but U.S. operations still hinge on receiving final FAA Type Certification.
